Through my work I am trying to search for my identity lost during multiple immigrations and create an imaginary bridge between contemporary society and my childhood spent in communist Russia.
My work is greatly influenced by my nomadic lifestyle and my art education which ranges from classical to conceptual to postmodern. Originally from Moscow, Russia, I studied in Belgrade, Serbia and graduated from Art Academy in Jerusalem, Israel, then did an artist-in residence program in Germany and got my masters degree in Amsterdam. Each one of these diverse places had influence on my work and shaped my personality. With each relocation I got adapted to new culture and its history, literature, rules, language and art scene.
The other part includes projects, which are the result of an attempt to embrace the genius Loci and reflect on my own connection to it. Being an immigrant, I am constantly searching for connection between my individual language of artistic expression and a culture I become part of. My works differ from each other not only in concept and technique. They are all rooted in immediacy and struggle of life as a female artist who’s trying to adjust to the new cultural environment.
In recent years I made collaborative works and projects which can be defined as site-specific social projects and involve various groups of population dealing with cultural background of participants.
